Cafe du Nord
This is one of San Francisco's oldest night-clubs. In fact, it was built to be a nightclub and is not a converted space like most clubs are. It is located on Market Street, at basement level right off the street.
Our $5.50 Mai Tai was made with pineapple juice, armaretto, Myer's Rum, ice, and lots of grenadine. It was topped with a cherry. The drink got progressively more watery, and by the end of the drink I couldn't taste anything but rum and water. A good, powerful kick thanks to the rum, but that was about the only merit of distinction.
The bar is old, but it was a pleasure to sit there and relax. Jazzy saxophone music played and set the mood. There are all sorts of nooks and places to relax here, and the staff was very friendly. Lots of brown and black paint everywhere which took us back a few years. There is a back-room where swing bands perform (usually on the weekends).
