Today we’re looking at Jared: Butcher of Song. This app has a history on the Mac, but of course we are looking at the iPhone/Touch version. The app is very simple: a yellow smiley face sings a strange song. Apparently created by Colin and Ian at Freeverse with their brother Jared Smith singing “Luna de Xelajú”. Which hardly seems like something anyone could love…

Maybe it’s a love-it or hate-it kind of thing, but the program has it’s fans. Take Justine Ezarik (aka iJustine) who is a famous videoblogger. Check out her “tribute” to Jared:

I happen to like Ezarik (despite the fact that she called Tropic Thunder the worst movie ever made). I like her take on gadgets and as shown in a plethora of online videos she has a hammy quality you don’t often see in attractive women of hers or any age. But, I guess I wouldn’t call Jared the “best iPhone app” either.

Though this application is no longer available, there are few apps that say more about what we’re here for at Useless Productivity than the infamous I Am Rich application.

For those who haven’t heard, I Am Rich was a $999.99 (the max allowed by Apple) application that displayed the jewel-like image you see here.

Yep, that’s it.

Of course, the idea is to find enough suckers buyers who are willing to shell out nearly a thousand bucks just as a status symbol. And as an application builder, the idea is brilliant. Find a market, find the right price along the supply/demand scale, and then collect the money. Well, that is until the “powers that be” find out about it.

You see, there was a bit of controversy regarding I Am Rich. It seems some people bought the app by accident. “I didn’t meant to spend $1000″ and “I thought it was a joke (but I clicked on the Buy Now button anyway.” So, Apple has pulled the app after eight people purchased the product.

And it’s really a shame. Not because the app is any good (see our rating below). But, call me crazy but the last time I checked we lived in America where free markets are just that. Free. If someone wants to spend a thousand bucks, who am I to argue?

Nonetheless, even Useless Productivity cannot recommend this app if it were still available. I mean, a thousand bucks? Com’ on!
